Steven Bachman is the new Executive Director of Four County Library System.

April Bliss, formerly the School Library System Coordinator at the Jefferson-Lewis BOCES, is the new Director of the Dunham Public Library.

Lauren Britton, Information Science and Technology librarian at the Fayetteville Free Library, is beginning a full time residential PhD program in Information Science and Technology at Syracuse University this fall.

Evelyn Butrico, Director of the East Greenbush Library, received the Ray Murray Award at the NYSLAA Conference this past June in Lake Placid. The Ray Murray Award is given to librarians, library directors, trustees, board members or others who have contributed to the recognition and/or professional growth of library assistants.

Mary Lou Carolan, Director of the Wallkill Public Library, is working on a masters’ program at Clarion University. Emma Clark Library’s new project, “Emma's Garden,” highlights the incredible landscape around the library. Visitors may learn all about the plantings by using their smartphones or tablets to scan QR codes to identify each plant.

John Cohen, formerly at Monroe Community College and the Finger Lakes Library System, is the new Director of the Ogden Farmers' Library.

Matthew DeLaney has been appointed the Director of the Manlius Library.

Patricia Evans, Victor Free Library Director, retired after thirty eight years of service.

Muriel Feldshuh’s “Traveling Exhibit Celebrating Children's Books” will be displayed at the Port Discovery Children's Museum this fall. The six large quilts that contain the artwork of over 165 children's book illustrators as well as author quotes will be on exhibit from September 7th - December 8th.

Jill Hurst-Wahl is the new director of the Master’s in Library and Information Science program at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies, effective June 2012. This year, Jill became the director of a second related program - the MSLIS program with school media specialization. Jill also teaches several graduate classes each year.   

Jennifer Jones has been hired as a librarian at DeRuyter Central School and will begin this fall.

David Karre has retired as Executive Director of Four County Library System, effective April 2013.

Marilyn Laubacher, Director of the Baldwinsville Public Library, is retiring August 30, 2013. Laubacher was honored as the winner of the annual Ruth M. Connell Award, named after the first librarian at the Baldwinsville Public Library. The Ruth Connell Award recipient is considered the Employee of the Year.

Judy Marsh, Director of the School Library System at Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES, is retiring on August 30, 2013. She has served as the director there for 11 years.

Sally McMaster, Library Section Supervisor, Access Services/ILL of the University of Rochester, River Campus Libraries received the Craig Koste Award for Outstanding Service at the NYSLAA Conference this past June in Lake Placid. The award recognizes those library assistants who have distinguished themselves by their service to NYSLAA and to the library assistants of New York on either a state or local level.

Cheryl A. Mirer of the Norwood Public Library is the winner of the annual NYLA/Rural Libraries Roundtable (RLRT) Conference Scholarship.
The Moffat Library has undergone quite a few changes in the last year. Moffat Library's historic building was devastated by Hurricane Irene with flooding that caused thousands of dollars in damages and left the community heartbroken. Despite the long journey and big loses, Moffat Library is open through construction and development at its new location.

Barbara Nichols Randall, Director of the Guilderland Public Library, is retiring August 2013.

Ann P. Penwarden is now Assistant Director of the newly formed Integration Services team in the Computing and Information Technology Services department at Monroe Community College.

Aletta Seales, a graduate of the Queens College MLS Program, volunteers at Queens Library, Hollis Branch.  Recently she led a celebration of Amelia Bedelia’s 50th birthday by encouraging children to participate in a read-a-thon of Amelia Bedelia books.

Carolyn J. (Lyn) Swafford, Executive Director of Canton Free Library, resigned her position effective May 2013.  She is a past winner of the Northern New York Library Award for Excellence in Library Service and was awarded the Library Director of the Year in 2012 by the North Country Library System

Susan Swanton, Interim Director of the Ogden Farmers' Library from 11/12 to 7/13, has retired.

Margaret Van Patten, formerly Head of Reference and Adult Services, will succeed Marilyn Laubacher as the new Director of the Baldwinsville Public Library, effective August 31, 2013.

Other Library News Around New York State


Ashley Sperber will begin work as a Library Media Specialist in the West Genesee School District at the Onondaga Road Elementary School. She has worked at the Fayetteville Free Library for five years, while she got her MLIS degree and also her certificate in school media.

Dr. Heidi Julien is the new chair and professor in the University at Buffalo Department of Library and Information Studies, effective August 15, 2013. Julien will be joining the GSE from the School of Library and Information Studies at The University of Alabama.

Susan Janczak is retiring from her position as Coordinator, Library Media Specialist Program at the University at Buffalo, Department of Library and Information Studies. Sue has been with the DLIS since 2002.

Jane Cramer, an associate professor and government information specialist at Brooklyn College, received the New York Library Association Government Information Roundtable (NYLA/GIRT) Mildred Lowe prize for her continuing leadership and professionalism in her field.

Kenneth Harper, Biology/LLE librarian, has retired from the University of Rochester.

Sophia Serlis-McPhillips has been appointed the new Director of the Middle Country Public Library. She was the former Assistant Director.

Thomas Blauvelt, Systems Manager at the Northern New York Library Network, retired June 2013.
