Executive Director’s Report – June 2013

Legislative Update

It is my pleasure to report that as of June 13, four of our five Legislative Priority items have passed the New York State Senate, and two items are scheduled for a floor vote in the Assembly.

Anticipated to pass both houses:

Library Card Info Distributed to Students which would require school districts to disseminate informational materials about applications for public library cards to students, when such materials are provided by the public library.

Streamlining of Conservation / Preservation Aid Program which would amend Education Law 273 (7) in order to streamline and modernize the Conservation Preservation Program for library research materials.

Once passed by the Assembly, these bills will advance on to Governor Cuomo to be signed into law.

The complete list of NYLA’s 2013 Legislative Agenda  is available online for your review.  The list is updated regularly with information on the status of each item.

Thank you to all of NYLA’s Library Advocates for your efforts in raising the profile of library related issues.  It is your hard work that has allowed these items to gain the attention they deserve from the New York State Legislature.

SCLA Ballot Question
The Suffolk County Library Association has collected the required petition signatures to apply for regional chapter status, as allowed for under the newly adopted bylaws changes.  Approval of the application will be included for consideration on the ballot.

Section Elections
Coinciding with the NYLA Council election, six of NYLA's Sections will be voting to elect officers.  (SSL has already completed their election of officers for 2013.)  When you participate in the NYLA Council Election, you can also cast your vote for the leadership of the your Sections.

Empire Friends Section Formation Petition
Concurrently available to the Council Election Ballot, the Empire Friends Roundtable is circulating an electronic petition seeking approval for a change in status from Roundtable to Section.  Friends of Libraries are essential to the well-being of libraries across the state and nation. As funding sources change and shrink for all types of libraries, Friends of Libraries play an essential role in advocacy, volunteer service, and funding for libraries.  Please consider signing this petition to show your support for Empire Friends to transition from a Roundtable to a Section in NYLA.
