It’s an APPealing Time @ Levittown Public Library

By Laura Hoffman,  Assistant Director & Lori Caniano, Reference Librarian

The Levittown Public Library (Levittown, NY) recently began offering a library app to patrons, which gives pertinent information such as hours, directions, contact information, and a calendar of library programs.  It also provides access to the library catalog, library website, downloadable books and audio books.  In addition, the app directs patrons to social media feeds, Facebook, and Twitter.  The Adult, Young Adult and Children’s Departments each have their own page to post information of interest to patrons as well as a place to keep other information, such as booklists.

The Levittown Public Library is the Central Library in Nassau County on Long Island and was renovated recently.  New meeting rooms, a computer lab and a separate Young Adult room were added, along with many other improvements.  Services include a wide range of programs for all ages, a large book, DVD and CD collection, e-book readers for loan, a center for government documents and a Foundation Center.

The library’s app was developed with the paid assistance of Infor Library and Information Solutions.  Infor dealt with the technical side of building the app and guided the library as to what they needed, such as pictures of the library and content.  The content was provided by the library and the library chose the headings for each page.  Infor built a system for the library to update and add content.  Three librarians (YA, Children’s and Adult) each update their own page, with the Adult Librarian updating the main page as well.

The library app was introduced to the community by posting it on the Library website, Facebook, Twitter, and advertising it at the Reference Desk.

Initial page views were high and page views are currently at a respectable level with the rate at which patrons are staying on the app increasing.  Patrons say that they like the app.  The Children’s Librarians report that the bigger the family, the more parents like the app.

The overall process was not difficult, with one update for Apple products to be made due to a change in connectivity for the Nassau Digital Doorway (Overdrive).  The Levittown Public Library’s app is available for Androids and iPhones, and may be downloaded for free in the Android market and from the App Store.  Check our new mobile website
