Get to Know Stacey Rattner

How did you first get involved with NYLA?
I was first recruited to be the VP of Conferences for SSL a few years ago. As the VP of Conferences I attend the NYLA Conference Curators meeting and am responsible for choosing and following up with the workshops sponsored by SSL. I'm now the SSL Curator for my third NYLA conference.

What do you wish people knew about NYLA?
I don't think school librarians realize that NYLA represents them. NYLA works for ALL of us and, to steal the words of our great president, "Together we can..."

What is the best part of being on NYLA Council (or NYLA in general)?
I really enjoy being with all kinds of librarians. I believe we can learn from each other. As far as being on NYLA Council, I like to be one of the voices of school librarians in a sea of ALL librarians.

What do you do when you aren’t being a librarian?
Does reading and listening to books count as "not being a librarian"? I do spend a lot of time shuttling my two kids to dance, swim, etc but aside from that, I love being with my family (so honestly I don't mind the chauffeuring because it gives us time to catch up on our days), enjoying a good meal (and dessert!) with friends and family, going to the theatre, meeting new people anywhere (the grocery store, a conference, traveling)

What advice would you give to a librarian who is just starting out?
Try and relax and take time for yourself! I get caught up in being a librarian 24/7 and sometimes need to just turn things off and be the non-librarian me (but that doesn't really ever happen). Also--welcome! This is the best profession EVER! Go out of your comfort zone and meet lots of people from lots of different libraries! It will make you a better librarian. AND don't be SHY! The worst anyone (an employer, author, administrator, etc) can say is "No." AND use social media positively. I really feel like it has helped me become who I am in the library world.

What is your favorite thing about your local library?
I use the Castleton Public Library, a small library in my community. I love that I walk in there and always get a smile from whoever is working at the desk and the patrons (who usually know me, too). I always feel like, "Norm."

Coffee or Tea? Why?
COFFEE. It picks me up in the morning. It's a social drink. It's delicious. It can be made many different ways. AND when I know I have a late night ahead of me, it is my best friend.

Cats or Dogs? Why?
Dog. We have never had a dog but are in the middle stages of getting one...Wow.

Cardigans - Yes or No? Why?
If it goes with the outfit, of course.

eBook or Print? Why?
I read all three kinds of books for different reasons-Ebooks usually on Netgalley; Print because I still like to hold the book; and audiobooks for all my chores, long runs, and car rides. I am getting more into eBooks because that way I can still read a page or two before I fall asleep and don't have to wake up my husband. Yes, I am a nightowl. Did you figure that out yet?

Dewey or LOC? Why?
Dewey of course. I'm a school librarian.

And finally, the most important question....what is your favorite dessert?
Anything with peanut butter and chocolate--a Reese's Sundae ALWAYS hits the spot.
