Get to Know Sandra Michele Echols

How did you first get involved with NYLA?
As a student attending SJU as a part of the IMLS scholars. I was a part of a panel presentation with my professors and cohort member in 2008.

What do you wish people knew about NYLA?
NYLA is a great organization and provides a lot of support to our members. The courses for professional development are great.

What is the best part of being on NYLA Council (or NYLA in general)?
The opportunity to work with a diverse group of individuals and learn from others currently working in the field.

What do you do when you aren’t being a librarian?
I am never not a librarian. Information is always around me and I enjoy helping people.

What advice would you give to a librarian who is just starting out?
The advice I would give is to observe tbe trends in the field as well as understanding the history. You will see that what is new has happened before just we are more reliant on technology.

What is your favorite thing about your local library?
The community of people.

Coffee or Tea? Why?
Tea. I had to give up coffee for medical reasons.

Cats or Dogs? Why?
Neither too expensive

Cardigans - Yes or No? Why?
Yes. Cardigans are very comfortable.

eBook or Print? Why?
Print. I absolutely love holding a book and turning pages. It is easier to go back in print then electronically.

Dewey or LOC? Why?
Both only because I have worked as both public and academic librarian.

And finally, the most important question....what is your favorite dessert?
Red velvet cake with homemade cream cheese frosting.
