Get to Know Jennifer Ferriss

How did you first get involved with NYLA?
My first memory is Leadership & Management Academy, class of 2007.

What do you wish people knew about NYLA?
If you are looking for an entry point to be involved and meet people from around the state, join a round table or section and volunteer.

What is the best part of being on NYLA Council (or NYLA in general)?
I am not comfortable being a passive participant in any organization I belong to, so I was grateful to be elected NYLA's ALA Chapter Councilor. I get to participate in NYLA and ALA Councils and meet librarians from around New York and the U.S. I truly enjoy the relationships, networking and ideas that are shared. The six-degrees of separation between librarians astounds me every time I am introduced to someone.

What do you do when you aren’t being a librarian?
Getting close to nature by trail running or hiking the Adirondack, Berkshire, Green or Catskill mountains is typical. I also am a live music and food junkie.

What advice would you give to a librarian who is just starting out?
Be brave and get involved. We all started out walking into a room full of strangers - in a few years you will know most everyone in the room.

What is your favorite thing about your local library?
What is not to love about my local library?

Coffee or Tea? Why?
Tea - I can drink herbal tea all day, coffee is for mornings only. Caffeine makes me squirrely.

Cats or Dogs? Why?
Cats - you can leave them alone for a few days with extra food bowls and water. See "What do you do when you are not being a librarian"

Cardigans - Yes or No? Why?
Hell yes. HVAC is not all it's cracked up to be - hot in the winter and cold in the summer.

eBook or Print? Why?
Print - I usually don't read on vacation (the madness) and my ipad is so old, it is just frustrating.

Dewey or LOC? Why?
Dewey - #publiclibrarygal4life

And finally, the most important question....what is your favorite dessert?
Ice cream
