Get to Know Cassie Guthrie

How did you first get involved with NYLA?
As part of the Legislative Committee in 2011. Was excited to be part of the strategy discussions regarding state library aid.

What do you wish people knew about NYLA?
Its sordid underbelly, including the palace intrigue that occurs at Council meetings. That's a joke. Sort of.

What is the best part of being on NYLA Council (or NYLA in general)?
Working with some really talented colleagues from across the state and from different library types.

What do you do when you aren’t being a librarian?
Lots of yoga.

What advice would you give to a librarian who is just starting out?
Don't take yourself or your job too seriously.

What is your favorite thing about your local library?
That we have the luxury of space with comfortable places for visitors to work solo or collaboratively. And our paludarium. Google it. It's pretty cool.

Coffee or Tea? Why?
Coffee. If you have to ask why, you'll never understand.

Cats or Dogs? Why?
Cats. Because they make you work for it. Anyone can get a dog to slobber all over them.

Cardigans - Yes or No? Why?
Yes. Because conversations at library board meetings can sometimes get heated and you might need to shed a layer or two.

eBook or Print? Why?
I do mostly print because I get too distracted when I'm reading on my phone. I download most of the audiobooks I listen to in the car because CDs are too much of a hassle.

Dewey or LOC? Why?
Dewey. Because Melvil Dewey is just a funny name.

And finally, the most important question....what is your favorite dessert?
I'm not a huge dessert person, but if I'm in the mood to ingest an additional 800 calories after a meal I'm going to go with layered carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.
