Get to Know Michelle Young
How did you first get involved with NYLA?
I was a member of the NYSHEI Board. When it disbanded, I went to Jeremy and said that academics need a more prominent place in our state organization. He invited me as a guest at a council meeting and the rest is history!
What do you wish people knew about NYLA?
That NYLA is for all library types.
What is the best part of being on NYLA Council (or NYLA in general)?
Understanding the pulse of the profession across that state in all kinds of libraries as well as the political angle in Albany with regards to our profession and institutions.
What do you do when you aren’t being a librarian?
With my husband, I own and operate Natural Horse Lover Farm where we focus on holistic are and education for people and animals.
What advice would you give to a librarian who is just starting out?
Be involved in professional organizations as well as committees, teams, boards within your organization. Your career is exactly what you put into it. If you are applying for jobs, read the job ad, make sure you are a good fit, and ask someone to review your documentation if you have any doubts.
What is your favorite thing about your local library?
I use the library that I work in pretty much for everything.
Coffee or Tea? Why?
Tea -- unadulterated, hot, herbal. It is cleansing and refreshing.
Cats or Dogs? Why?
Love both but dogs have my heart a bit more. My dogs (a Great Dane and a Miniature Pinscher) are wonderful companions, family, they can look into your soul and truly have love in their hearts. They are fun to be around and of course, keep you warm at night!
Cardigans - Yes or No? Why?
No, blazers at work (more professional for my position), zip-up hoodies at home (don't get hay stuck in them when I am at the barn).
eBook or Print? Why?
Good question, it depends. For reference, ebooks are great. I find that for pleasure, I still prefer print because ebooks still have navigation and other technical issues that are annoying.
Dewey or LOC? Why?
LOC -- seems to make more sense to me and I find more materials to my liking quicker.
And finally, the most important question....what is your favorite dessert?
All of them? Cherry pie.
