Battle of the (LIBRARY) Bands
Thursday, November 9, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Newberry Music Hall
Our annual Scholarship Fund Benefit Event will be held at the Newberry Music Hall. Join us for the first-ever Battle of the (LIBRARY) Bands. Each performing band will include at least one librarian!
Proceeds from the event will support the NYLA-Dewey Scholarship Fund, which provides financial support to enable interested and deserving students to pursue a Masters Degree in Library Science at an ALA-accredited library school in New York State. Each year, a recipient from each of New York’s eight library schools is eligible for an award of $1,000 to cover tuition costs and related expenses.
Tickets are $50 per person.
The first-ever Battle of the (LIBRARY) Bands will be featuring....
The Renewers are a band from upstate New York, performing originals and covers about and inspired by libraries. This all-library-staff crew paid its dues in the mean stacks of toddler storytimes, teen patron rap sessions, and group music instruction programs before joining forces in 2017. Equal parts Talking Heads, The Clash, and The Band, The Renewers are guaranteed to increase your circulation and free up your hold shelf. Check them out!
Guitarist/bassist Ben Himmelfarb is a librarian at the White Plains Public Library, and from Albany Public Library we have lead singer and librarian Tor Loney, drummer and library assistant Dan Barker, and multi-instrumentalist and library clerk Sam Davies.
The Classics present swinging Jazz, Blues, and American Songbook standards. Their unique, playful style honors the originals, while simultaneously making the songs their own. The Classics are newly formed band with players from the local Saratoga Springs music scene. Be prepared for a swinging, hot good time!
Stephanie Hartwell-Mandella: (Vocals. Head of Youth Services/Katonah Village Library)
Rob Duboff: (Guitar). Todd Meade (Drummer). Josh Lindy (Bass)
We are Upstate Hussy. Four professional women by day, punk rockers by night bring a mix of classic noisy covers and originals (mostly inspired by their pets) to the Capital Region scene.
Nicole Monroe (vocals, not a librarian, but an English teacher at Saratoga School District)
Sarah Clark (guitar and librarian)
Kim Akins (bass, and regular library supporter)
Chanda Dewey (drums, and owes a lot of library fines)
Schroon River String Band
The Schroon River String Band plays country blues, bluegrass, fiddle tunes and old time banjo songs. They have performed at Caffe Lena, at area libraries and restaurants, and other venues. The band is Harold Shippey on Bass, Denise Radtke on guitar, Mike Phelps on guitar and mandolin, Hal Waite on Harmonica, and librarian Dan Hubbs on banjo and mandolin.
