Suffolk County Library Association (SCLA) Update

Computer and Technical Services (CATS)
On November 7, CATS toured Stony Brook University’s Innovation Lab (a collection of three on-campus makerspaces that feature things like vinyl cutters, 3-D printers, green screen and virtual reality technologies).
Support Staff Division (SSD)
SSD held their first Annual Safety Fair at Brentwood Public Library on October 5. Speakers focused on safety and the library employee.
Young Adult Services Division (YASD)
YASD held a meeting on November 9, involving using social media for programs and promoting the library. Their annual December Luncheon will be held at the Outerbanks Restaurant in Riverhead on December 1 and will feature Nova Ren Suma, author of The Walls Around Us, 17 and Gone, Imaginary Girls and more. There will be a great selection of raffles, the winners of the Teen Librarian Awards will be announced and the 2017 YASD board members we will be welcomed in.
SCLA held its Annual Dinner and Meeting on November 10 at The Meadow Club in Port Jefferson Station.
This committee represented Suffolk Libraries at the Long Island Doctor Who Convention on November 11-13. They hosted two panels- The Future of Libraries: This Isn’t Your Grandma’s Library Anymore and Time Traveling Books and Books That Stand the Test of Time on Friday evening. They ran 13 programs for various ages including Tech Camp, Doctor Who Trivia, crafting as well as a highly anticipated panel featuring Nicholas Briggs, voice of the infamous Daleks.
Suffolk County Library Access
This committee provided two workshops at NYLA this year- Breaking into Your County Jail and Accessible Library Customer Service. They spoke about Veterans Services in Suffolk County on November 15 and will provide a Music and Memory Music Therapy informational meeting on November 29.
Long Island Library Resources Council (LILRC)
LILRC hosted their 21st Annual Archives Month Conference at the Vanderbilt Mansion, Museum and Planetarium. Three guest speakers touched on raising funds to archive materials and the history behind the items.
SCLA Involvement with the 2016 NYLA Annual Conference and Trade Show
SCLA sponsored and co-sponsored the following programs: Building Relationships and Connecting with Parents, I Can’t Even; Exploring New Adult Fiction, NYLA Sustainability Initiative, Dollar Store Makerspace, Teen Led Libraries Beyond, Beer at Your Library, Motivate Your Staff for Free, Making Your Library Accessible, Increasing Your Circulation and Show It Off.
