Youth Services Section (YSS) Update

Submitted by Mary Jo Smith, YSS President

The Youth Services Section is looking forward to the NYLA conference. We have several great programs for you! On Thursday, November 3, there will be a program on building relationships with parents. After that is the YSS Membership meeting with author Eric Luper. It is very important that you attend this meeting, because we will be voting on our revised bylaws. For your evening entertainment, we have Telling Tales, with Marni Gillard. Donations for the Ann Gibson Scholarship Fund will be accepted at this event.

Rest up on Thursday evening, because we have a full day of fun on Friday! Our programs include Pop Culture Fandom, Advocating for Video Games, Teen led libraries, and our crowning jewel, the Empire State Award luncheon! This year’s recipient is Steve Sheinkin, and you don’t want to miss his talk!

Saturday will bring us Family Literacy in a Food Pantry, and the ever-popular Table Talks. See you there!

Looking further ahead, mark April 28 on your calendar for the YSS Spring Conference. The theme is Out of the Box, and it will be in beautiful downtown Ithaca. I’m excited for it!

After the conference, I will be the Past President of YSS. One of my main tasks will be finding individuals to serve on the YSS Executive Board. If you have any interest in filling a very important role in our section, please contact me at maryjo.smith@libraryweb.org, or fill out an Active Member form on the NYLA website.

Thanks!
Mary Jo C. Smith
