Youth Services Section (YSS) Update
Submitted by Mary Jo Smith, YSS President
The Youth Services Section had a very successful Spring Conference on Friday, April 15, at the lovely Desmond hotel and Conference Center in Albany. Our keynote speaker, Jarrett Krosoczka, had us all laughing. He announced that he would be taking over writing duties for the Starfleet Academy books, and he gave us all an ARC of the first book in the series that he wrote. Our luncheon speaker was Bruce Coville, and he spoke eloquently about the ripple effect each of us could have on kids. The Empire State Award winner for this year was unveiled at the luncheon as well, I’m very excited to say the winner is Steve Sheinkin! There were many excellent breakout sessions, and I think everyone left the conference feeling like they had learned something, and had fun to boot.
At our Executive Board meeting the day before the conference, we finished revising our by-laws. We will look them over prior to the Summer Board meeting so we can present them to the YSS membership for approval at the Fall Conference. We have a full slate of candidates for our upcoming Board elections. Laura Panter is running unopposed for the 1st Vice President/President Elect, Valle Blair and Kim Hazen are running for Secretary, and Liz Anastasi and Jackie Narkiewicz are running for First Year Director.
We’ve had one productive conference call to iron out problems with the Three Apples award. Our second one is scheduled for Thursday, April 26th, and I have great hope that this award will emerge triumphant.
