Suffolk County Library Association (SCLA) Update

The Long Island Library Conference was held on May 5 at the Melville Marriott, jointly sponsored by the Suffolk County Library Association and the Nassau County Library Association.  It was a packed day, full of presentations, exhibitors and association tables. The various divisions of both organizations presented or sponsored at total of 24 programs for attendees to choose from, covering all facets of librarianship, administration/management and support staff. Program offerings included “Crowd-Pleasing Memory Programs”, “Minecraft Basics”, “Promoting Family History Research in Your Library”, “No Barriers – Striving to Eliminate all Barriers to Access”, “Serving the Business Community” and much, much more.  Award-winning children’s book author Tad Hills was the keynote speaker. 

About 40 people took the opportunity to meet, network and share ideas at the SCLA/PLDA networking night held at the Patchogue-Medford Library on May 13.  The evening featured refreshments and live music performed by Joe Latini.

The SCLA/NCLA Second Annual Bowling Fundraiser will be held on June 10 at the Farmingdale Lanes to raise money to support the organizations’ scholarship funds.

Computer and Technical Services Division (CATS)

The April Technology Information Forum was about the evolution of libraries into community centers and what role Information Technology plays in that evolution.

Reference and Adult Services Division (RASD)

The Annual Local History and Genealogy Program Showcase was held on April 21.  Long Island Reads, featuring author Jodi Picoult, was a sold-out event.  At the annual MOSAIC breakfast the featured guest speaker was Professor Peg Christoff, of Stony Brook University on “Unpacking our Past for the Future: Asian Americans on Long Island”. The introduction was by artist/activist Margarita Espada.

Young Adult Services Division (YASD)

YASD held a Town Hall where members got to know the YASD board and share their ideas and suggestions.

Support Staff Division (SSD)

The SCLA Support Staff Division presented an introduction to Microsoft Excel for library staff in April.

Division of Academic and Special Libraries (DASL)

DASL held an Academic Invitational at Suffolk County Community College on April 8.
