Youth Services Section (YSS) Update
by Mary Jo C. Smith, YSS President
A friend once brought me a t-shirt from a library conference with an illustration of Edgar Allan Poe wearing sunglasses and the inscription, “Authors are my rock stars.” I love that shirt, because it’s a truism that librarians—especially youth serving librarians, I feel—are huge fans of authors. I have met authors I admire and been dumbstruck—which, believe me, is not an easy feat. Due to this predilection, I am eagerly awaiting our upcoming YSS Spring Conference on Friday, April 15. The participants will have the opportunity to meet Jarrett Krosoczka, the author/illustrator of the Lunch Lady series (among others) and Bruce Coville, the author of The Unicorn Chronicles and many others. The name of the recipient of this year’s Empire State Award will be revealed at the conference as well. Along with all the author goodness, there will be opportunities to learn about new story time songs, bringing STEM into programs, and powering up your teen patrons. I hope to see you there.
A conference call was recently held to get started on re-envisioning of the Three Apples Book Award. YSS and SSL committee members will be looking into other states’ children’s choice awards for guidance as they decide how to best move forward. Stay tuned for a new, improved Three Apples Award.
