President's Update

Submitted by Debby Emerson, NYLA President

I’m proud to begin my term as NYLA President, and will try to represent all of you to the best of my ability. My job is much easier because I can draw on the experience and expertise of NYLA Past President Geoff Kirkpatrick, and the enthusiasm and forward-thinking of NYLA President-Elect Barbara Stripling. The 2015 - 2016 NYLA Council is a great team of committed individuals from all types of libraries, who will work together to make great things happen for the organization.

Reflecting on the recent conference in Lake Placid – as always, it was a good time, and lots of good ideas and best practices were shared. But more than that, it is our annual opportunity to come together with library colleagues and vendor partners from all over New York State and beyond. The networking that happens at the annual conference is invaluable, and many of the conversations that start at the conference continue throughout the year. That is what membership in our professional organization is all about.

This year we will be developing a new strategic plan for NYLA, based on the new Mission Statement: “NYLA leads, educates and advocates for the advancement of the New York library community.” At each in-person NYLA Council meeting we will be discussing one of the three Guiding Principles:

NYLA advocates for the New York library community.
NYLA advances excellence in New York libraries.
NYLA enhances member engagement.

Most of the discussion about specific goals, action steps, and timelines will take place within NYLA’s sections, roundtables, and committees. This means that everyone will be involved, and our efforts should result in a plan that speaks to the entire membership.

I like talking with people and hearing your ideas, and I love visiting libraries, so please be in touch! I can be reached at my “day job” at

Best wishes to all for a happy and healthy holiday season!
