Librarians at the NYS Fair

Submitted by Dana Willbanks, NYLA Communications and Marketing Manager

New York’s library community was well represented this year at the annual State Fair in Syracuse, NY.  Over 140 volunteers, including librarians and library staff from across the state, manned the booth and promoted libraries and library services to thousands of fairgoers.  The booth was also graced during one of the volunteer shifts by NYLA’s very own President, Treasurer, Executive Director, and Communications Manager.

Fairgoers who stopped by the booth were able to get first-hand information about the various types of libraries and library services in the state.  Volunteers answered questions including everything from what exactly “special” libraries are, to what their overdue fines are used for and why they have to pay them, to why libraries are still around in this increasingly Internet- and technology-based world.

Visitors to the booth also had the chance to spin the trivia wheel and win a delicious treat if they answered a fairy tale-themed trivia question correctly (and even if they needed a little extra help).

The booth was decorated not only by smiling library volunteers, but also by a popular children’s storybook character: a 7’ foot long Very Hungry Caterpillar hung above the booth, made entirely out of balloons by Jeff the Magic Balloon Man.  Although his head popped halfway through the Fair, visitors to the booth still recognized what remained of this iconic figure.

Join us next year at the 2016 State Fair or, better yet, volunteer a couple hours of your time to the library booth!
