Section of School Librarians (SSL) Update

Submitted by Jill Leuning

The Carol A. Kearney Leadership Institute in Cornell this past August entitled "School Librarians – Deeply Embedded Fully Collaborative", led by Olag Nessi and J’aime Pfeiffer, inspired participants to go back and unpack their Empire State Fluency Continuum and insert some of the assessments and activities into their lessons and to use them to collaborate with their colleagues.  Congratulations to our 8 scholarship award winners.  We had a lively auction led by the vivacious Jim Belair that raised money for scholarships for next year.

We have forged a wonderful collaborative opportunity for our members between the New York State Council for the Social Studies and SSL.  SSL is represented by the strand ”Information and Media Literacy” at their 78th Annual Convention in Albany on March 30 – April 1st – “Social Studies: Creating Pathways to Success.”  Last year we had an author panel and 11 presentations from our members and we hope to do the same this year.  Please consider sharing your expertise in collaborating with your colleagues in the area of social studies.  The call for proposals is underway here.

In May, you can look forward to our annual conference.  It is hosted by ENYSLMA this year and will take place at The Desmond Hotel in Albany May 5-7 – “Capitalizing on our Past, Revolutionizing our Future.”  Keynotes are Holly Black and Jon Schu, and our Knickerbocker Award Winner is Patricia McCormick .  The conference has out its call for proposals here.
