Executive Director’s Report – August 2015

The Best Conference Ever

Together with a small army of volunteers, we strive every year to make the NYLA Annual Conference a bit better than the year before.  This year will be no exception, as over one thousand of the best and brightest librarians from across the state come together for three days with the express purpose of developing themselves and the profession.

NYLA125: Explore. Learn. Grow.  This anniversary year’s roster boasts a keynote address by David Lankes, remarks from ALA President Sari Feldman, and the historic host city of Lake Placid – the hometown of NYLA founder, Melvil Dewey.

Two new events will bring fresh excitement:

NYLA2015 Opening Ceremony
Wednesday, October 21
5:00 PM – 6:00 PM
We are inviting all comers to band together to form ‘countries’ (library systems, regional affiliations, invented places, fictional lands) to be represented during our Opening Ceremony.  For more details and to register to participate, click here.

NYLA After Dark
Thursday, October 22
10:00 PM
Every librarian has a great story about their experiences (or a few) – NYLA After Dark provides a platform to share one of your best.  Imagine a library themed TED talk, crossed with the MOTH radio hour, then add in a cash bar.  For more details and to register to participate, click here.

If the NYLA125 conference will be your first, we have assembled a listing of tips to help you make the most of your experience.  For more details, click here.

Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with peers, explore new ideas and be inspired by what is possible.  For details and registration for the 2015 NYLA Annual Conference, October 21-24 in Lake Placid, NY, click here.

NYLA Council Election 2015

We are pleased to announce the results of this year’s Council Election, and to report a slight uptick in ballots cast (654 votes representing 18.8% of eligible voters).

  1. Barbara Stripling, President-Elect, who will serve from Nov. 2015 – Nov. 2016 and then as NYLA President from Nov. 2016 – Nov. 2017.
  2. Elaine Lasda Bergman and Grace Riario as Councilors-at-Large who will each serve from Nov. 2015 – Nov. 2018

All terms start and end at the given years' Annual Conference.  Congratulations to each of our new Council members!

Bios for each of the new elected Councilors remain available here.
