NYLA + BEA + NYC = FUN
As in the past, the New York Library Association (NYLA) had a presence at Book Expo America from May 27 - 29 at the Javits Center in New York City.
The NYLA booth had staffing help by past NYLA president Rocco Staino; TinaMarie Vella, librarian at CUNY Graduate School of Journalism; and Anastasia Chiu, librarian at Teachers College, Columbia University. Chiu, who also serves as the Mentoring Program Coordinator for NYLA’s New Member Engagement Subcommittee, spent her time at the booth recruiting possible mentors from the many NYLA members who visited the booth.
Mr. Staino, who is the director of the Empire State Center for the Book, spent his time publicizing the upcoming NYS Writers Hall of Fame by having attendees take a selfie wearing a Statue of Liberty crown and post it to social media. Erica Bingham-Green and Laurenne Teachout were among the NYLA members who traveled down from their library in Stephentown, NY, to take advantage of the three days of authors, books, and programs. Steve Sheinkin, Mary Rose Wood, and Julie Chibbaro were among some of the authors who stopped by the booth and donned crowns for a photo opportunity.
There were also contingents of school librarians from various parts of New York who came to BEA to help with their shrinking book budgets. Sue Bartle, School Library System Coordinator at Erie 2, lead a group of ten librarians from her member schools where they packed boxes of books to be shipped back to their schools.
