A Tribute to Marcia Eggleston

June 5, 1960 - March 30, 2015

Marcia’s energy, grit, and passion have always impacted library professionals throughout New York State and beyond.  Besides being SLMS President in 2005-06, Marcia was Region 4 (the North Country) Representative from 1990-92, starting her long involvement with working for libraries. She was SLMS secretary from 1993 until 2004 when she was President-elect, then Secretary again. She took the secretary position seriously and always took detailed notes. She was SSL’s Archivist until she left the SSL Board in 2013.

Simultaneously, she was the Co-Chair of the SLMS, then SSL Leadership Institute from 2000 (except for her NYLA President year, 2010-11) until her last Institute in 2013. As Educational Leadership Co-Chair since 2000, Marcia was a driving force behind the Institute to bring it to where it is today.  SSL will be establishing an Institute scholarship in her name. Individual contributions may be made in her memory to the scholarship through the the NYLA Office. See below for donation details.

Marcia received the NYLA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.  She was a great force for the better for New York State's librarians and the professional organizations that support them.

And then there was her trademark, unforgettable laugh.
She shared her knowledge, positive energy, humor and love of life with everyone she met.  Her humor was never more evident as when Dewey (our larger-than-life soft sculpture doll of Melvil Dewey) would appear at meetings and at our annual SLMS conference. She was a dynamic and lively force for the better and her loss will be felt throughout NYLA, SSL and beyond.

From current NYLA/SSL President Jill Leinung on Facebook: "We have lost a true school library advocate and leader. but most importantly we have lost a true friend. Marcia Eggleston was president of SLMS, as it was known back when I came on the board. She was so welcoming and helpful and become my mentor and friend. I have missed her at our events recently - her infectious laugh which you were always glad to hear because you knew she was in the room; and her enthusiasm for everything library. She has already and will be missed - but our memories of her will make her live on forever."

Marcia was a beautiful, gracious, kind and happy spirit, so positive and humorous through her long fight with diabetes and cancer. She refused to let disease control her but lived her life in the way she chose in spite of all she went through.
Her larger than life personality and her laugh that could fill a room will never leave our hearts.
