March – April 2015
We were well represented to fill our strand of “Library and Information Literacy” at the NYSCC Convention on March 11-14. We had 11 school librarians/teachers present at the conference which was also well attended by school librarians and school library system directors. The conference provided a lot of valuable information about the Social Studies Framework and Toolkit. Many thanks to NYSCSS President Elect Lawrence Paska and SSL Past President Karen Sperrazza for making this great collaboration happen. The conference will be in Albany next year.
The SSL Annual Conference is fast approaching. It will be held in Tarrytown NY April 30 – May 2. Strengthening Our Impact is hosted by SLMSSENY and features Marcia Rodney as the Keynote, Steven Kellogg is the Knickerbocker Award Winner, and Sarah Weeks is the Rip Van Winkle Award Winner. Other speakers are storyteller Jonathan Kruk, Carol Collier Kuhlthau and Dr. Joette Stefl- Mabry.
Groups have been working on initiatives from the School Librarian Summit at NY SED this summer led by John Brock. Groups have conferenced to enhance the usability and effectiveness of the SLMPE Rubric and the accuracy of Question 21 on the BEDS form.
We are also eagerly anticipating the great professional development experience of the NYLA/SSL 2015 Carol A. Kearney Educational Leadership Institute. Olaga Nessi and J’amie Pfeiffer will lead the conference which is entitled: School Librarians – Deeply Embedded Fully Collaborative. This will take place August 3-4 at Cornell in Ithaca NY.
