The Public Libraries Section of NYLA is dedicated to supporting public libraries and public library staff of New York State. Our goal is to help sustain and improve libraries and library services by providing continuing education opportunities, conference programming, awards, scholarships, advocacy and by supporting key NYLA initiatives. Requests for PLS Programming Support

New York Library Association roundtables and affiliates are eligible to submit a request for conference programming support from PLS. This support is intended to help finance bringing speakers to the annual NYLA conference, or other public library conferences in New York State. 
Each NYLA roundtable or affiliate may submit one request per year. 

  • Awards are offered for up to $1,000, with additional support considered as the annual budget allows. 
  • A maximum of five awards are given each year. 
  • Requests must be submitted by June 30th of each year.
  • Roundtables that receive support will be required to credit PLS in conference publicity.

2018 PLS Elections

PLS has three open postions for the 2018/2019, with terms beginning at the NYLA annual conference in Rochester:

  • Vice President/President-Elect  (First year of three-year term; Serves as Annual Conference Curator)
  • First Year Director  (First of a three-year term)
  • Treasurer (First of a two-year term)

Public Libraries Section Mission Statement

(PLS was organized in 1972.)

The Public Libraries Section represents the interests and concerns of the public libraries of New York State. Membership is encouraged and open to all interested in the issues confronting the information services and business of publc libraries. This section endeavors to provide continuing education and leadership opportunities that promote and enhance library services. In addition, PLS acts as an advocate for public and political awareness striving towards adequate funding and support.
