Candidate for Treasurer-Elect (2022-25)
Director, Altamont Free Library
I am proud to stand for Treasurer of the incredible New York Library Association.
For the past six years, I’ve had the extraordinary good fortune of serving as the Director of Altamont Free Library, which was founded just over 100 years ago and is housed in a building that will turn 125 next year. Serving in my job, I am reminded every day that I am a temporary steward of an organization that has existed long before me, will exist long after me and serves a purpose much bigger than me. So too with NYLA. If I am elected to serve as Treasurer, I pledge to work with the NYLA leadership team to leave the organization stronger than we found it.
We can do this in a number of ways. We can increase our membership by reaching out to every single library worker, Friend, and Trustee in New York State, and making sure that every member feels welcomed, accepted, and heard. We can also invest in new ways of connecting with our members and diversifying the methods we use to gather, advocate, build professional support structures, and share hard-earned wisdom among our members for the benefit of all of our communities. We can also make sure that we are more transparent, by ensuring that annual financial reports and other key documents are available to all members through the NYLA website.
I am proud of the successes achieved during my tenure as AFL’s Director. We have dramatically increased our organizational sustainability through aggressive fundraising and conscientious financial stewardship, increasing our financial assets by nearly 68% over the past six years. We have made many substantial improvements to our home in the former Altamont Train Station, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. We have also been named a Library Journal Star Library three times.
As a member of the broader library community, I am a proud member of PLS and LAMS, and currently serve as the PLS representative to the NYLA Legislative Committee. I am also a graduate of the inaugural 2019-20 cohort of the reimagined NYLA Developing Leaders Program.
If elected, I will do everything in my power to ensure the NYLA remains the strong voice of the library community in New York for decades to come. I encourage you to email me at Director@AltamontFreeLibrary.org with any questions, concerns, or suggestions
