Friends of Libraries Section of NYLA Presents a Webinar: Charitable Planned Giving As A Fundraising Tool

Every library has a gap between annual projected income and the actual cost of daily operations.  A healthy endowment fund that is properly managed can help to bridge that gap as a portion of the income earned from the endowment can be used to fund annual operations or special library needs.

How do library leaders balance efforts to secure funding for annual operations with growing and preserving an endowment?  For example, Wood Library in Canandaigua has weathered some tough financial years by focusing on a multi-pronged funding strategy.  Community-based funding, an annual fund drive, fundraising events, grants, and fees for services are all part of the equation; but, it has also benefited from an endowment that is funded by charitable planned gifts from individuals who value the library and want to secure its future.  

Learn how legacy gifts can build an endowment fund to provide sustained income for the library over time.  Review promotional tactics to raise awareness about these types of gifts and how to acknowledge and engage these special donors.  Come discuss the elements of effective and coordinated fundraising strategies—setting goals, devising written plans, budgeting, creating a database, dynamic execution, and evaluation—that will result in relationships with people who are ready to make an investment in the library’s future.  


Learning Objectives:

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Compare the different approaches to raising funds for the library, with a focus on charitable planned gifts.
  2. Apply tactics that will result in a foundation of donor support to help the library fulfill its mission and respond to community needs.
  3. Strategize ways to redesign fundraising activities to include legacy gifts and memorial contributions that benefit the library.
  4. Identify best practices to reach loyal donors, making it easy for supporters to name the library as a beneficiary in an estate plan.
  5. Craft a case for support using authentic messages that feature supporters who value the library and patrons that will benefit from a thriving, financially secure library. 



Maria T. Bucci is a fundraising professional with more than 30 years of experience raising funds for charitable organizations.  She currently serves as Development Specialist for Wood Library, an association library in Canandaigua, NY, a position she has held since 2006.  She has raised over $1.2 million for Wood Library's operating budget through an Annual Fund Drive, creates opportunities for donors to include Wood Library in their charitable giving plans, and helps to plan and carry out multiple fundraising events throughout the year.

Maria is a passionate promoter of community libraries, has participated in legislative advocacy days for both the New York Library Association and the American Library Association, and has championed community-based funding for Wood Library.  Maria also serves as the library's grant writer and played a supporting role in securing $4 million for Wood Library during its “New Chapter” capital campaign.  Her e-mail signature includes this phrase: “Build a legacy.  Include Wood Library in your estate plans.”


Cost and Registration:

There is no cost to attend the webinar for current members of the Friends of Libraries Section of NYLA or for elected officers of Friends Group organizational members who have been listed on the “Elected Officer Registration Form” on file with NYLA’s Director of Membership Services.  The NYLA/FLS membership must be active on April 1, 2020, and the membership expiration date must be after the date of the webinar.  When registering, FLS members need their assigned user name and password to qualify for an “FLS Member Reg Pass” that will waive the webinar registration fee.    

The charge for the webinar is $25 for NYLA personal or organizational members (who are not members of FLS) and $35 for those who are not members of NYLA. Group registrations are also available ($75 member rate /$99 nonmember rate). Interested participants may choose to join NYLA prior to registering for the webinar to receive the NYLA member rate. However, at the time of registration, a NYLA member may not add FLS to their existing membership in order to attend the webinar at no cost.
