A Message from the President...
2014 December e-Bulletin President’s Report, from Geoff Kirkpatrick
Many of us have just returned from an excellent conference in Saratoga. I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone involved in making the conference such a huge success. It was one of the most highly attended conferences in NYLA history and the quality of the sessions was very high. I frequently found myself making difficult decisions between several excellent programs. The bar has been set for Lake Placid in 2015.

Bridge to Professional Friendships: Sharing my Home as a First Timer at NYLA
Wednesday night of the NYLA conference, even before the full conference begins, I go out to dinner and enjoy local music at an Irish pub with two fellow librarians, Brigid Cahalan, a recently retired librarian from Jersey City, and Alexandra Kelly, the Outreach Services and Adult Programming Coordinator at the New York Public Library. And yet a few hours ago I had barely known anyone attending the conference; I surely hadn’t known anyone enough for a night out on the town. But here I was; I had a free ticket to the social experience of NYLA even though I had just moved to New York State and just recently started my career as a librarian. I met these lovely ladies all because I took a chance and opened my home here in Saratoga Springs to other conference attendees.

Freeport High School Library Celebrates READesign

After years of hoping to makeover our high school library, it finally became a realization, as we celebrated its Grand Opening on Oct.24. What finally led to this? We won the Capital One Heart of America Foundation, READesign Library Makeover Grant. Thanks to our economics teacher, Eileen Shultis who applied for this grant, we were selected as a finalist and received a site visit. During the visit we were interviewed and later that day we were told we had won! This spurred our school district to provide additional funds, that ultimately contributed to bringing our library into the 21st century. The renovation provided our library with a much needed new floor, paint, and furniture. We received new books, including print books on careers and financial literacy, as well as Follett ebooks to supplement our curriculum. New technology included: 30 HP All in One desktop computers, a Bretford Teaming Table for collaboration, 2 Sharp Aquos Interactive Boards, 4 iPads for our reference bar and a College and Career Access Room.

An Open Letter from Buster, The Red Hook Public Library Literacy Hound
Dear NYLA, Thanks for encouraging me to tell my tale. As you know, I’ve been reluctant to let the cat out of the bag (And I mean that literally. That feline thought she had the last say in personal grooming. As if.) Now that she’s busy destroying yarn for winter, I have time to gather my thoughts and let you know what it’s like to be a literacy hound.
