2014 August e-Bulletin President’s Report, from Sara Kelly Johns

Who is Rich Harwood? After forty or so e-mails, NYLA was on his schedule. I am sure the conference being in Saratoga DID make a difference.  Since ALA connected with Rich in 2012 with its community engagement initiative, the vocabulary in the divisions, roundtables and at headquarters has changed to include terms like “aspirational,” “outwardly focused,” “community conversations.”

East Hampton Library Starts Summer Season With New Children's Wing

After years of wondering, Noel MacCary, a school librarian in Westerchester County, New York was able to prove the provenance of a large mural-like painting that has hung outside his library at Pequenakonck Elementary School. What do a boat, windmill and a lighthouse have do to with a library? Answer – you will find each of those objects as part of the interior décor of the new children’s wing of the East Hampton Library on Long Island.  After years of battles with the local zoning board that resulted in a 2011 decision by the New York State Supreme Court the 6800 square foot addition became a reality and opened on June 21.

School Library Summit: A Statewide Strategic Plan for School Libraries

The 2014 School Library Summit, held at the State Education Department on July 7 and 8, could definitely be characterized by attributes which are often associated with the Common Core: multiple perspectives, rigor, relevance, collaboration, communication, and deeper understanding.  Indeed, the Common Core energized this gathering of thought leaders from key leadership organizations including NYLA, SLSA, SSL, State Education Department, and from Pre-K-12, higher education, and the community.
