(Interim) Executive Director's Report

Let me begin by stating that it is an honor to have been entrusted by the NYLA Council with leading the organization during the search process for a new Executive Director.

Advocacy Day Recap, March 6

Library Advocacy Day 2012 was a rousing success! 1,489 advocates from across the New York State converged in Albany to voice their support for libraries and library funding. 63 legislators attended the Meet and Greet reception, connecting with constituents, and having their photos taken for their 2012 READ posters and bookmarks.

Long-time library champion Senator Hugh Farley addressed the mid-day rally, along with author of the Don’t Know Much series, Kenneth C. Davis, much to the delight of the attendees. Tom Galante, Queens Library Executive Director also spoke, directly addressing the huge contingent of advocates in attendance from Queens.

On Monday, March 5, the New Yorkers for Better Libraries PAC held their 6th annual fundraising banquet. Over 120 attended, their contributions supporting the PAC and the work that it does to advance the library agenda. The Legislature and Governor agreed on an on time State Budget for the second year in a row. The budget agreement includes $2.615 million in additional Library Aid, as well as $1.3 million in funding to those libraries impacted by the MTA Payroll tax (in lieu of exempting those libraries from the payroll tax). In addition, the Legislature moved $200 million from competitive school grants to formula funding in School Aid, providing more direct aid to schools.

Congratulations to library advocates across the state who helped to ensure that your elected representative understood the value and importance of libraries. We look forward to working together with you all to move forward laws and policies that will have a positive impact on the library community.

Library Assistants Training Program Continues

Coming later this Spring, the popular Library Assistants Training program is coming to Long Island and Central New York. The program will run at Nassau Community College May 14th-19th and at Onondaga Community College June 25th-30th.

This 18 hour, certificate, non-credit program is open to individuals already working in libraries, or people interested in working in libraries. To receive a certificate, the individual must complete all four programs: Introduction, Public/Circulation Services, Reference, and Technical Services. The cost for the program is $250.

New Membership Database for NYLA

NYLA is in the process of migrating all member data from the system we have used since 2007 (MemberMax) to a new system (Affiniscape). You will notice that some items look slightly different, most notably our new online membership center. We are diligently working to recreate our entire infrastructure within the new system, and appreciate your patience during the transition. The new system brings our website and database ‘under one roof’ allowing for greater functionality.

Affiniscape powers the new e-Bulletin, will run our upcoming election and handle all registration for the 2012 NYLA Annual Conference.

NYLA Council Election 2012

It is time again for the NYLA Council elections. Candidate information and ballots will be distributed during the month of June, with elections closing July 15, 2012.

This year NYLA members will be electing:
- A President-Elect, who will serve from Nov. 2012 – Nov. 2013 and then as NYLA President from Nov. 2013 – Nov. 2014.
- Two Councilors at Large who will each serve from Nov. 2012 – Nov. 2015
- One Treasurer-Elect, who will serve from Nov. 2012 – Nov. 2013, and then as NYLA Treasurer from Nov. 2013 – Nov. 2015.

The Nominating Committee has identified the following slate of candidates.

In accordance with NYLA bylaws, any NYLA member may petition to be added to the slate of candidates. Additional nominations must include a letter of acceptance from the candidate, and must be nominated by a petition signed by one percent of the total voting membership (determined as of December 31 of the preceding fiscal year) which for this election would be thirty-nine. All documentation for additional nominations must be RECEIVED by the NYLA office by May 31, 2012.
