Summary:

Reporting to the Dean of the BLAIS, the Barnard College Director of Archives and Special Collections (BASC) is responsible for the care, development and leadership of the College’s Archives and Special Collections.  The Director, in collaboration with the Associate Director and others, plans, organizes, and oversees all aspects of the College’s Archives and Special Collections unit.  This position is responsible for managing or coordinating management of the day to day operations of the archives, which includes a portfolio of hiring, training, and supervising of professional and student staff, preparing reports, and administering an annual budget for acquisitions, special projects, preservation, and supplies.   As part of the BLAIS Management Team, this position will collaborate across BLAIS and the Milstein Center for Teaching & Learning to leverage our various resources for project and services, and to assess and create development opportunities for all staff.

The Barnard Archives & Special Collections is a highly collaborative and entrepreneurial unit, with partnerships both within Barnard and external communities.  For example, recent work has included work with the Barnard Center for Research on Women on a CLIR grant to enable digitization of audio archives of the Scholar & Feminist Conference.  The staff of the Barnard Archives commits to work that is equitable and anti-oppressive, and encourages and supports work which centers voices, knowledge, and memory-making practices historically excluded from the archival record. Cortland Free Library is an association library and member of the Finger Lakes Library System (FLLS). It is funded by a library tax as well as an endowment and has a 2019 budget of $531,068.  Cortland Free Library serves over 30,000 residents within its chartered area and circulates over 124,000 items annually.  The Director is supported by an Assistant to the Director and a Business Manager as well as 3 other full-time and 7 part-time dedicated staff, an active Friends group and other volunteers.
