YSS 5-Year Goals and Objectives, 2018 - 2023

Goal I: YSS will foster inclusion and diversity in membership and services

Objective 1

Identify underrepresented populations.

Action

Determine what the term “underrepresented” shall be defined as.

Determine what NYLA is doing for underrepresented library staff and define who those populations are.

Objective 2

Encourage active membership of underrepresented populations.

Action

Use social media platforms to engage members.

Offer more diverse programming at NYLA & YSS Workshops.

YSS Board Members will cultivate opportunities to promote YSS in their communities.  

Goal II: YSS will champion library services for families, children, and teens

Objective 1

Promote awareness of the value of library services to youth, families, caregivers, and educators.

Action

Promote to membership national youth initiatives and encourage participation in these related events.  

Objective 2

Assess and expand YSS involvement in NYLA legislative initiatives.

Action

Use our tools to encourage more YSS members to register as Advocates and send emails to state assembly and legislature.

Legislative Liaison will communicate regularly with YSS membership to encourage more member engagement in library advocacy at the state and local level.

Goal III: YSS will actively develop new generations of youth services leaders

Objective 1

Promote and deliver excellent continuing education opportunities for youth services providers working in libraries.

Action

Establish a professional development curriculum for YSS staff and provide more resources for higher quality speakers.

Provide educational workshops in addition to the spring and annual YSS conference offerings.

Continue to offer more diverse programming at the NYLA and YSS spring conferences.  

Objective 2

Develop and maintain connections with professional education programs.

Action

Reshape a YSS Board position to serve as a liaison to professional education programs.

Objective 3

Provide multiple pathways for member awareness of section activities involvement.

Action

Utilize traditional and social media avenues to encourage member participation in YSS initiatives.  

Actively investigate and test new avenues of membership communications.
