Library workers exposed to inappropriate speech or conduct by members of the public might wonder if what they have experienced is “actual” harassment or “harmless” unwanted, misconstrued conversation. Where is the line between patron-centered, relational customer service and personal assertiveness, comfort, and safety? How can we firmly establish a culture of civility in our public spaces for everyone? Attendees will gain insight into the scope of workplace sexual harassment, applicable state laws, and current library and related-fields research, and will learn how to effectively respond to instances of patron-perpetrated sexual harassment directed towards themselves or others in the library.
|Elizabeth Olesh is the Director of the Baldwin Public Library. Prior to this, she was the Manager of Outreach Services and then Assistant Director at Nassau Library System. In addition to an MLS from Queens College, Elizabeth holds a Master of Public Administration from Baruch’s Executive MPA program. She has served on many local, state, and national committees.|

We all know that libraries are awesome - but does your community know that? How do you effectively promote all your amazing programs and services to an audience that includes everyone in your community? Join Albany Public Library's super fun PR team to find out! APL serves an incredibly diverse audience of all ages, interests, identities, and abilities, so our marketing has to be just as diverse. We'll break down what we do in a way that works for libraries that may not have a PR team and whose staff has to fit marketing in with all their actual librarian duties. We'll cover social media, digital and print marketing, and community engagement in a way that doesn't overwhelm (we promise!).

Every public and association library in New York is required to have a written long-range plan of service. The library’s long-range plan often involves the Friends of the Library, most especially in the arenas of fundraising, advocacy, and long-term financial support. When the Friends develop their own strategic plan, the group can be certain that their projects parallel the library’s objectives. A strategic plan will help the Friends prepare for the future, determining the direction of the organization, and improving the ability to fulfill its mission. Reviewing the plan regularly with the library board will help the Friends leadership assure the organization’s ongoing support for the library. Fundraising efforts, community involvement, membership recruitment, service to members, and succession planning for the group’s leadership all play a role. Planning can provide stability and sustain the Friends most vital asset: its volunteer corps. Clear objectives will keep active volunteers engaged, but can also attract new volunteers who want to align themselves with a group that is flourishing and has a vision of success. Note: Libraries are encouraged to enroll Friends officers, trustees, and library administrators as a strategic planning team. When two or more FLS members register for this CE workshop and attend as a team, the library’s Friends group will receive a $25 rebate in the form of an Amazon gift card after the conference.
|Evelyn Neale is the Executive Director for the Colonie Town Library and has led her own training company, Successful Change Inc., for the last three years. Evelyn is a certified coach, facilitator, and trainer. Combining her passion for leadership with her background in information and education, Evelyn works with entrepreneurs and organizations, offering sessions on strategic planning, effective communication, and healthy workplace culture. Her most recent work with Bishop House had her facilitating a planning session with the senior leadership team at GlobalFoundries. Among the other organizations she has worked with are The Wesley Community, the New York Library Association, and Berkshire Farm Center & Services for Youth.|
CE-D: Today’s Comic/Graphic Novels and Graphic Nonfiction – Programs, Book Groups, and Lesson Plans, Oh My!

Comic books, graphic nonfiction, and graphic novels continue to ignite the reading imagination of young people from new titles such as Tiger vs. Nightmare to Hey, Kiddo and superheroes alike. Today just might be a new golden age of comics. Comics are completely integrated into the reading life of young people and receive notice through major awards from librarians.
This workshop will provide ideas for programs using specific titles; suggestions for books that work with book groups and with multi-part programs; and using comics for specific curriculum plans. We will also pair comics with other texts and illustrated books as we work to engage all possibilities for reading fun. There will be a short comic history; for novices we will talk about how to read and enjoy comics; what one should look for in comics as we analyze some specific pages; and finally looking at diversity in the recent past as well as the newest comics.
|Joyce Laiosa is the retired Head of Youth and Family Services of Voorheesville Public Library. She has been involved in Youth Services for over 25 years. She is a Past President of the NYLA’s Youth Services Section and has served on many American Library Association committees with the Association of Library Service to Children (ALSC) section. She served on the ALSC Notable Books Committee, 2014-2016, and has recently been appointed to the Bechtel/Special Collections Committee for 2018-2020. She has been an adjunct professor at the University at Albany since 2000. JOyce is also a consultant in Early Literacy Programming with UHLS and MVLS.|

ALA recognizes that equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) impact all aspects of work among members of the association, within the field of librarianship, and within the communities served by libraries. This work includes addressing, dismantling, and transforming policies, structures, and biases. This pre-conference aims to facilitate an understanding of self and our interactions with others. We will begin to identify and disrupt learned behaviors by exploring implicit bias, cultural competence, and privilege. This session will also introduce the officially adopted definitions of equity, diversity, and inclusion developed by members of ALA as a model for libraries.
The morning section introduces equity, diversity, and inclusion within a social justice framework. Through multimedia and participatory experiences, the workshop explores cultural competence, implicit bias, and privilege in the context of librarianship and the communities served by libraries. As a result of attending this session, the attendees will have a foundational understanding of themselves and the interactions needed to begin to identify and disrupt learned behaviors.
The afternoon section will build on the concepts introduced in the morning through a framework for creating an action plan at your library. Participants will work collaboratively with tools created by ALA’s Office for Diversity, Literacy, and Outreach Services. These include an action plan template and an asset-based assessment model.
|Briana Jarnagin is the Program Coordinator, Community Engagement in the Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services at the American Library Association. In this role, she provides programmatic support for recruitment and retention efforts through expertise in community engagement, including communicating across diverse groups, event management, and engaging ALA membership in leadership opportunities and professional development tools. Briana is a member of the 2019 Chicago cohort of the Obama Foundation Community Leadership Corps, serves on the National Diversity & Social Justice Committee for the Latina-founded organization Kappa Delta Chi Sorority, Inc., and previously interned with the Illinois Holocaust Museum and the Center for Neighborhood Technology. She holds a BA in geography with minors in sociology and geographic information science from Northeastern Illinois University.|
|Kristin Lahurd is Interim Director of ALA’s Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services (ODLOS). Kristin and her team create programs and resources that promote recruitment and retention for the field of librarianship and best practices in serving underrepresented communities. She also coordinates ODLOS’ continuing education efforts, including workshops and webinars on topics surrounding equity, diversity, inclusion, literacy, and outreach. Kristin brings to the position several years of work in education, including roles as a literacy coach, English teacher, and reading teacher in the middle grades. Prior to her work in public schools, Kristin held positions in public health and social service. She has master's degrees in education and public health and a bachelor's degree in English.|
|Mariel Colbert is the Program Officer in the Chapter Relations Office at the American Library Association. Her role supports the relationship between ALA and its fifty-seven chapters, including serving as staff liaison to the Chapter Relations Committee, organizing the biannual Chapter Leaders Forums, supporting advocacy initiatives and ALA’s response to domestic disasters that have impacted libraries, facilitating the joint student membership program, maintaining communications and promotion between ALA and its Chapters. Mariel has a master’s degree in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Chicago, and a bachelor’s degree in International and Area Studies with a minor in French from The University of Oklahoma. Before joining the Chapter Relations Office, Mariel worked in the Association of College and Research Libraries at ALA. Before working at ALA, she was an English teacher in Istanbul, Turkey.|
