Albany Public Library is HAPPY to announce that; Daniel Barker, UAlbany MSIS 2013, has been promoted to the position of Librarian 1 in our Washington Avenue Youth Services Department. Meghan Kelly, UAlbany MSIS 2016, has been promoted to the position of Librarian 1 in our Washington Avenue Youth Services Department.

The Brunswick Community Library in UHLS recently entered an MOU with the Grafton Community Library, making Natalie Hurteau the Director of both Brunswick and Grafton.  This also lead to the promotion of Brunswick's Sara Hopkins to a full-time position of Program Manager. 

Buffalo & Erie County Public Library Director Mary Jean Jakubowski announced, Jeannine M. Doyle has been appointed Chief Operating Office, Buffalo & Erie County Public Library. Ms. Doyle joined the Library System in 2011 as Assistant Deputy Director, Human Resources/Labor Relations. She holds a law degree from State University of New York at Buffalo. Maureen E. McLaughlin has been promoted to Assistant Deputy Director, Technical Services & Information Technology. Ms. McLaughlin joined the Library System in 1992 and was most recently Division manager, Technical Services & Technology Support. She holds a MLS from SUNY Buffalo.

Jessica Clemons is the first SUNY Librarian to be named an Association Research Libraries Leadership Fellow.

Carol Gilliam was featured on a podcast with Chris Kretz, from the Long Island History Project in December. The Roosevelt Public Library Black Heritage Collection is the third largest in the state of New York.

Elizabeth Hobson Has moved from the Nyack Public Library in Rockland County, NY and is now the Director at the Dobbs Ferry Public Library in Westchester county, NY.

Madelyn Folino, Director of the Florida Public Library, will be presenting at the Banned Books Symposium at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh on March 10. "Defending the Queens of King King" will focus on her experience with a patron's 2004 challenge to the Dutch tale of a prince who marries a prince and the unintended consequences: the uniting of a fractious library board in unanimously defending intellectual freedom and the surprise of receiving NYLA' s Intellectual Freedom Award for just doing her job. Madelyn has been a storyteller for over thirty years and is a founding mother of Orange County's Black Dirt Storytelling Guild. They have met monthly at the library for seventeen years. She will be doing a fringe performance at Sharing the Fire: Northeast Storytelling Conference in Plymouth, MA, March 23-25. Madelyn's 90-minute program, "Nevertheless, She Persisted" will feature true tales of strong women in her maternal line who had more grit than they knew and handled whatever life threw at them.

Lisa Kropp was promoted to Director of Lindenhurst Memorial Library on January 1st.

Livonia Public Library has hired Caitlin Crilly, MLS for the newly created full-time position Technology and Youth Services Specialist. Caitlin’s many responsibilities include children’s programming for the library. She has continued the library’s highly successful Makerspace programs for K-8th Grade and recently initiated Family Movie Night at the library.

Tor Loney, of Albany Public Library, has been promoted to Librarian II. He serves as librarian at the John A. Howe Branch in Albany's South End.

Maxwell Memorial Library appointed Amanda E. Perrine as director. Former director Katy Benson retired.

The Mineola Library held a food, clothing, and supply drive in September for victims of the Hurricanes in Florida, Texas, and Puerto Rico.  The community outpouring was overwhelming and filled three trucks.

 

 

Janet Park was recently appointed as the Interim Executive Director of the Onondaga County Public Library System.

Rebekkah Smith Aldrich has been named to the advisory group of the ALA Center for the Future of Libraries. She also has two books coming out from ALA Editions, Sustainable Thinking: Ensuring Your Library’s Future in an Uncertain World  and Resilience (Library Futures Series, Book 2).

Somers Library Teen Creative Writers Group moderator, Christine Adler, was asked to collaborate with Poets & Writers’. Ms. Adler had a featured interview on their blog. The interview offers Poets & Writers’ blog readers a glimpse into the process and experiences of workshop facilitators.

Gordon C. Tappan, passed away on Oct. 28, 2017.  He was the longtime President of the Phoenix Public Library.

Celia Vollmer, Community Outreach Coordinator from the Brentwood Public Library was recognized on Saturday, January 13th at the fourth annual NAACP Legacy Gala for her work in the community. This year’s event celebrated the 50-year legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and featured a speech from Dr. King’s oldest son Martin Luther King III.

Wood Library received a Mary Clark Thompson Community Health grant to fund personal wellness kits that can be borrowed for up to 3 weeks at a time by library patrons. Each kit has a theme and contains books, DVDs, equipment, motivational materials, and software links so that people can try a variety of fitness methods from the comfort of their homes. Kit themes include:  walking for fitness, yoga, upper body strengthening, hand fitness, meditation, and flexibility. Wood Library is offering this program to make fitness information and equipment more accessible to people in the community and to help improve the general well-being of our community.
