Libraries Step Up to Westchester Green Buisiness Challenge

Librarians from all over the Hudson Valley gathered at the Hendrick Hudson Free Library in Montrose, NY for the Westchester Green Business Challenge Library Forum. The session explored how libraries can use the WGBC's measurement tools and support to incorporate environmentally sustainable practices into their operations to achieve certification as a Westchester Green Business, and inspire and promote sustainable practices among other businesses in their community and industry peers.

Jill Davis, Library Director at HHFL, described her library's two-year process towards certification, which lead not only to a greener library, but new opportunities to leverage other funding sources, increased staff engagement, increased community engagement, and a position for the library as a community leader. HHFL was the recipient of the 2016 Joseph F. Shubert Library Excellence Award from The New York State Regents Advisory Council on Libraries for their efforts in this area.

At the forum, members from NYLA's Sustainability Initiative Committee shared information about upcoming opportunities to bring sustainable practices to your library; the Sustainability Initiative's Pilot Library program will will lead libraries through a certification program that is based in part on the Westchester Green Business program, and the Agents of Change training will create new leaders in sustainability in the library community. Contact SI Co-Chairs Rebekkah Smith Aldrich or Matt Bollerman for more info.

Stay tuned in this space for announcements about how YOUR library can become part of this revolutionary sustainability movement!
