What Can NYLA Do For You?

Seriously.  I’m asking. NYLA is a membership-driven non-profit organization with a mission to lead in the development, promotion, and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning, quality of life, and equal opportunity for all New Yorkers.  But what can it do for you?  What can NYLA do to help you be better at your job? To help your library run more efficiently?  To aid in solving a nagging problem that you have been struggling with?

We routinely recite that NYLA provides, professional development, networking and communication opportunities and (perhaps most importantly) advocacy on library related issues.  These are the ‘benefits’ of NYLA membership – but all relatively intangible.

Recently NYLA has begun offering credit card processing services to allow libraries to process fines for patrons who prefer this method of payment.  NYLA has served as a fiscal sponsor, allowing an affiliate to apply for grant funding without forming their own 501c3 non-profit.  NYLA has processed conference registrations for many organizations. NYLA is always looking for ways to help our members find creative solutions to challenges.

I welcome and encourage each of you to add the question ‘What Can NYLA Do?’ to your thinking. Let us know what issues you are facing and let us explore the possibilities together.  NYLA wants to serve as a trusted partner in helping you and your library accomplish more.  Send me an e-mail, give me a call.  I want to hear from you and help you find a better way forward.  What can NYLA do for you?

Selecting Our Leaders - NYLA Council Election 2014

From June 15 – July 15 NYLA members will be electing candidates to the following positions; President-elect, two Councilors-at-Large, and Treasurer-Elect.  Please participate in the selection of the leaders of your association.

This year NYLA members will be electing:

  1. A President-Elect, who will serve from Nov. 2014 – Nov. 2015 and then as NYLA President from Nov. 2015 – Nov. 2016.
  2. Two Councilors-at-Large who will each serve from Nov. 2014 – Nov. 2017
  3. One Treasurer-Elect, who will serve from Nov. 2014 – Nov. 2015, and then as NYLA Treasurer from Nov. 2015 – Nov. 2017.

 The NYLA Council Ballot will be open from June 15 - July 15.  Details on accessing the ballot will be posted to nyla.org and distributed via e-mail.

Section Elections
Coinciding with the NYLA Council election, each of NYLA's Sections will be voting to elect officers.  An overview of the candidates can be found here. Details on the candidates for each Section election can be found on the Section's web pages.  When you participate in the NYLA Council Election, you can also cast your vote for the leadership of your Sections.

ParaLibrarians Roundtable

A motion was advanced by NYLA Members Heidi Jensen, Pioneer Library System, and Peg Pelletier, Newark Public Library, to create a new NYLA Roundtable to represent the professional interests of library assistants and support staff.  The required 25 signatures were collected, and at the May 8, 2014 NYLA Council meeting the motion was approved.

The purpose of the ParaLibrarians Roundtable is to support the networking and professional development of those who work in the library community, in a paraprofessional capacity, and to assist in advancing NYLA's mission.

Teaching Skills for Librarians

A Professional Development Course Offered in Collaboration with the College of Saint Rose.

New for 2014, the course will be offered as a completely online study experience.  The modules will engage students in the development of foundational skills for teaching and learning for librarians; delivery of instruction about libraries and library skills; use of technology for teaching and information resources for teaching library skills; and the need for collaboration in selecting content for effectively teaching library skills.  The course will run from:

Help Spotlight Excellence - Call for Nominations

Each year, NYLA honors individuals and organizations for their support, leadership and advocacy of libraries and intellectual freedom at the Annual Conference.

We are now accepting nominations for the following Awards and Scholarships. Nominations are due JULY 15.

The Outstanding Advocate of Libraries Award
The Outstanding Advocate of Libraries Award recognizes and honors an individual who, or a group that, has made a far reaching, sustained contribution to the promotion and/or support of library and information services to the people of New York State or residents within a designated service area within the State. Recognition may include lifetime NYLA membership, citation, and gift.

The Outstanding Service to Libraries Award
Outstanding Service to Libraries Award recognizes and honors an individual who, or a group that, has made a significant, sustained contribution to the development, promulgation, growth or extension of library/information services to the people of NYS or to residents within a designated service area within the State. Recognition may include lifetime NYLA membership, citation, and gift.

The SirsiDynix Intellectual Freedom Award
SirsiDynix Intellectual Freedom Award recognizes an individual, group, or organization that furthers the cause of intellectual freedom in New York State.

The Mary Bobinski Innovative Public Library Director Award
Mary Bobinski Innovative Public Library Director Award recognizes a public library director who has developed or implemented an innovative program leading to an increase in financial support and/or usage of their library.
