NYLA IFC

The Intellectual Freedom Committee is charged by the NYLA Council to be informed on all current intellectual freedom issues and legislation; to respond to and attempt correction of all infringements and violations by an individual, group, or library, of the principles of intellectual freedom as set forth by the American Library Association in the Library Bill of Rights; and to maintain a clearinghouse of information concerning intellectual freedom for the use of the Committee and other members of NYLA.

IFC services include providing a support network and reporting mechanism for libraries and staff involved in intellectual freedom issues. Requests for information and assistance should be sent to the attention of the NYLA Executive Director and will be forwarded to the Committee.

IFC created the Intellectual Freedom Defense Fund (IFDF) to provide, upon request, assistance and other advisory support to NYLA members involved in disputes regarding specific censorship or confidentiality matters or broader First Amendment issues. NYLA members in good standing may request an application from the NYLA Executive Director.
