The School Library Media Section of the New York Library Association (SLMS) is currently seeking applicants for a three year position as the New York State representative to the American Association of School Librarians (AASL.).
The term of office becomes effective at the SLMS Membership meeting on October 17, 2009. The successful candidate will be ratified in a vote by the SLMS Executive Board.
The New York State representative to AASL must commit to attending three or four AASL meetings each year. These meetings are on Saturday and Sunday at ALA Mid-winter, Friday and Sunday at ALA Annual, a weekend meeting with representatives from AASL Region II in the spring, and the bi-annual AASL conference. In addition, the AASL representative attends each of the quarterly SLMS Board meetings, which are scheduled to coincide with the NYLA and SLMS conferences and the summer Leadership Retreat, as well as a winter weekend meeting. A written report is submitted to the Board and is also included in each of the quarterly SLMSGrams. The AASL representative reports at the SLMS Membership Meetings at NYLA and SLMS.
A list of the ALA conferences is available at http://ala.org/ala/conferencesevents/index.cfm under UPCOMING EVENTS and the AASL conferences can be found at http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/aasl/conferencesandevents/aaslcalendar/aaslcalendar.cfm
The SLMS AASL representative has a line in the NYLA-SLMS budget which covers much of the representative’s normal expenses at the conferences. There is also reimbursement for much of the expenses incurred to attend SLMS Board meetings.
Because of the considerable commitment, we are asking that those who might be interested in the position forward a SIGNED LETTER postmarked by September 15, 2009 to:
Carole Kupelian
President NYLA-SLMS
PO Box 437
Constantia NY 13044
The letter must include a commitment by the candidate to attend the meetings outlined above, and an assurance that the candidate’s administration will allow him/her the time off to attend these meetings. Further, the letter should include the candidate’s personal information, AASL membership #, and a brief biography including his/her experience in professional organizations on local, state, and national levels.
